She was on her way up to her flat after making sure that everything was all right and that the path. people who were still working had all that they wanted when she came face to face with Tom.

He greeted her with a charming smile. ‘Darling Beatrice, I’ve an hour or two off duty. Let’s go somewhere and have a drink and talk things over.’

She paused one foot on the stairs. ‘Hello, Tom. I’m going out this evening and I wish I could make you understand that there’s nothing to talk over. Not any more. Do please understand that.’

She went past him and he started to follow her. She went on upstairs and then stopped. ‘Go away, do. I shall be late.’

‘I must see you—explain—before you go to Holland.’ He smiled again, turning on all the charm.

‘Well, you can’t. Tom, why can’t you understand that I don’t want to marry you? Why do you persist?’

‘Because I know you’ll change your mind, darling—women do, you know.’

‘Well, here’s one who won’t.’ She swept on upstairs, opened her door and shut it firmly behind her.

She wasn’t going to let him spoil her evening, she told herself as she showered and got into the midnight-blue velvet dress she had decided to wear. Ready with only a few moments to spare, she studied herself in the mirror. The dress was just right with its long tight sleeves and demure neckline. She added a plain gold chain, checked her evening bag, crammed her tired feet into the new shoes and tossed her velvet coat over a chair just as the doorbell rang.

She opened the door at once, only remembering at the last minute that it might be Tom. It must have shown on her face, for the professor gave her a considered look as he went past her.

‘Who were you expecting? Surely, even at my worst, I don’t bring such a look of annoyance to your face?’
